As a part of the“Triangular Study Abroad Program for Reciprocal Partnership with North and Sub-Saharan Africa”, which Hiroshima University launched in FY2020, an online introductory Japanese language course was held for two months from August 2021.
Out of thirteen students in Africa who completed the online Peace Course held from March to April 2021, eight students (4 Egyptians, 3 Zambians, and 1 Malawian) participated in the online introductory Japanese language course. The students learned Japanese writing systems (Hiragana and Katakana), greetings and everyday expressions, basic grammar, and also learned about Japanese traditional culture and Japanese society. All lectures were conducted online, with a combination of on-demand self-study and weekly simultaneous interactive feedback sessions. Hiroshima University students acted as tutors to support the students in Arica in learning Japanese language during the course.
Four students out of eight in Africa are accepted as special auditing students from Oct 2021 to March 2022, but due to the counter-measures against COVID-19, they have not come to Japan yet and have been studying Japanese language and subjects in their respective fields online since the beginning of October.
