Japan-Africa Triangle Education Program

[Event Report] The Final Meeting of “Peace Science of Hiroshima Course” by African Students was held online.

As a part of the “Triangular Study Abroad Program for Reciprocal Partnership with North and Sub-Saharan Africa”, which Hiroshima University launched in FY2020, a one-month online course “Peace Science of Hiroshima Course” took place from March 2021.

Students from five universities in Egypt, Zambia, and Malawi participated in the online course and learned about the reconstruction of Hiroshima, testimonies of A-bomb survivors, and peace efforts in Japan and their own countries. Thirteen students successfully completed the course, and the four representative students gave their final presentations at the final meeting on 1st July, 2021. In total, thirty-one participants, including Hiroshima University students, faculty members, and students in Africa attended.
The presenters expressed their views on “peace” in relation to their own countries and their own research fields, and actively exchanged opinions with the participants. One of the comments from the participating HU students was that it was an interesting finding that each of them had a completely different take on peace.

This program is an exchange and collaborative study with students not only from one country in Africa, but also from three countries (Egypt, Zambia, and Malawi) with different cultural and historical backgrounds.

The goal of this program is for students to acquire a multiple perspective that allows them to look at issues from different points of view, as well as the ability to think and respond flexibly and work together to solve problems.
